Where Ghost Stories, Urban Legends, and Terrifying Encounters Meet

Bridges are supposed to connect two places. But according to paranormal folklore, some bridges connect the living with something far more sinister.

Across America, historic bridges have become the settings for ghost sightings, mysterious disappearances, strange sounds, and encounters that defy explanation.

Here are four of America's most infamous haunted bridges.

1. Old Alton Bridge — Denton, Texas

Better known as Goatman's Bridge, this historic Texas crossing is surrounded by one of

America's most chilling urban legends.

According to local folklore, a goat farmer was murdered near the bridge, and his restless spirit continues to haunt the area. Visitors have reported strange noises, shadowy figures, glowing eyes, and the terrifying sensation of being watched.

Some believe the Goatman is more than a ghost. They believe something monstrous waits in the darkness.

2. Emily's Bridge — Stowe, Vermont

Officially known as Gold Brook Covered Bridge, this picturesque wooden bridge hides a tragic legend.

Local stories tell of a young woman named Emily who died near the bridge after a failed romance. Visitors claim to hear screams, footsteps, and unexplained scratching sounds.

Some even report mysterious marks appearing on their vehicles.

3. Sachs Covered Bridge — Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg is already famous for its Civil War ghost stories, but Sachs Covered Bridge has developed a particularly unsettling reputation.

Paranormal enthusiasts report apparitions, disembodied voices, and unexplained sensations near the historic crossing.

Some legends connect the activity to soldiers who died during the Battle of Gettysburg.

4. Bunny Man Bridge — Fairfax County, Virginia

A railroad overpass near Clifton, Virginia, has become associated with the terrifying Bunny Man legend.

Stories describe a mysterious figure dressed in a rabbit costume who threatens people approaching the bridge.

Although the more sensational versions of the legend are unverified, the location remains a popular destination for urban legend enthusiasts.

What Makes Bridges So Haunted?

Perhaps it's their isolation. Maybe it's the history surrounding them.

Or perhaps bridges symbolize something deeper—a crossing between safety and danger, life and death, or the familiar world and the unknown.

Whatever the explanation, America's haunted bridges continue to attract investigators, thrill-seekers, and people who want to discover whether the legends are true.

And one Texas bridge may hold the most terrifying story of them all.

Twenty people boarded a party bus headed for a music festival. Then someone suggested one quick stop at Goatman Bridge.

The group traveled to Texas looking for excitement. Instead, they encountered something they never imagined.

When their party bus was discovered near Old Alton Bridge, investigators found evidence of a violent struggle.

The passengers were missing.

A recovered recording revealed something standing in the darkness.

Something with horns.

Something that shouldn't exist.

Twenty people went looking for the Goatman. They may have found him.
