9 Rules That Could Save Your Life This Halloween

A Special Halloween Warning from Hallowfield Publishing
Halloween is supposed to be fun.
You dress up. Eat candy. Watch horror movies. Maybe visit a haunted attraction.
But what if the things you read about in horror books were real?
What if that strange noise upstairs wasn't the house settling?
What if the creepy old board game in your closet was waiting for someone to play?
And what if Halloween itself became angry because your town decided to celebrate on
October 30 instead of October 31?
At Hallowfield Publishing, we’ve investigated enough fictional nightmares to offer some important advice.
Follow these nine rules. Your Halloween survival may depend on them.

RULE #1: ON HALLOWEEN, NEVER PLAY A CHILDREN’S BOARD GAME WITHOUT CHILDREN.
You find an old Chutes & Ladders game in your grandmother’s attic.
You invite three friends over to play, passing the time during the day on Halloween.
Halfway through, the game pieces begin moving without anyone touching them.
Congratulations. You’ve made a terrible decision.
You played a children’s game without children. Now the game has become evil.
Hallowfield Warning: If you hear children whispering and there are no children in the room, it’s already too late.
RULE #2: NEVER ACCEPT A WISH FROM A MYSTERIOUS POND.
On Halloween, you’re walking through the woods when you discover a pond that wasn’t there yesterday.
A voice offers you one wish.
Money? Fame? True love?
Here’s a better wish:
“I wish I'd never found this pond.”
Unfortunately, that might not work either.
RULE #3: DON'T CUT IN LINE. EVER.
You’re at Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando, waiting forty minutes in line, knowing that you’re only halfway through.
Then someone sneaks ahead of you.
Normally, you’d just complain.
Instead, you secretly put a No Cutting sticker on their back.
Somewhere out there, before Halloween is over, a mysterious figure called Cutter will shred this line cutter to pieces.

RULE #4: IF A CHILD IS DRAWING EVERYTHING IN RED, ASK QUESTIONS.
The Friday before Halloween, your gifted child comes home from school, after dressing up in a white plastic mask, red shirt, and jeans.
Your child has a drawing in her hand.
It’s a picture of the principal.
Standing inside a grave.
The drawing is entirely red crayon.
Your child smiles and says, “We all drew the same thing.”
The school may be looking for a new principal after Halloween unless you warn them.

RULE #5: NEVER ACCEPT A CHALLENGE TO SPEND THE NIGHT AT AN ABANDONED FARM.
Your friends dare you to spend Halloween night at Drayer Farm.
The house looks abandoned.
The windows are broken.
There’s a strange boy standing in the field with a black rooster perched on his shoulder.
Halloween will be over in four hours.
Try to survive.
Wait. It’s daylight savings time.
You need to survive five hours.
RULE #6: IF YOUR FRIEND STARTS CREATING REAL MONSTERS, END THE FRIENDSHIP.
Everyone has that one friend who takes their creative hobbies a little too seriously on Halloween.
But when your writer friend starts bringing his fictional monsters to life, it’s time to reconsider the relationship.
Especially if he’s been writing revenge stories about people he doesn’t like.
Hallowfield Warning: Just make sure you never criticize his latest manuscript.

RULE #7: WHEN YOU HEAR CLICK, CLICK, CLICK... DON'T LOOK BACK.
You’re alone in a hallway on Halloween night.
The lights flicker.
Then you hear it.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Something is following you.
You turn around and see a ghost glowing in your least favorite color.
What do you do?
Find another color…
RULE #8: NOT EVERY DRAGON IS YOUR ENEMY.
Oh Halloween, you encounter a mysterious Shadow Dragon in the woods.
Your first instinct is to scream.
Your second instinct is to run.
But what if the dragon simply wants to be your friend?
Sometimes the strangest creatures have the most important lessons to teach us.
Hallowfield Warning: Keep your imagination alive. You never know when you’ll need it.
Inspired by Case File: 079 — The Dragon Who Came from Darkville.
RULE #9: NEVER, EVER CHANGE THE DATE OF HALLOWEEN.
Your town council announces that Halloween will be celebrated on Saturday instead of October 31.
Everyone thinks it’s a wonderful idea.
Except Halloween.
The pumpkins begin rotting. Shadows appear in mirrors. Strange laughter echoes through empty streets.
And suddenly, that convenient scheduling decision doesn’t seem so convenient.
Hallowfield Warning: October 31 is not negotiable.

BONUS RULE #10: IF YOU SURVIVE HALLOWEEN, READ SOMETHING SCARY.
Congratulations!
You’ve avoided cursed games, supernatural ponds, masked killers, haunted farms, dangerous children, and mysterious creatures.
But your Halloween adventure doesn’t have to end.
Hallowfield Publishing has an entire library of supernatural mysteries, paranormal investigations, terrifying creatures, and psychological horror waiting to be discovered.
Every book opens another Case File.
Every Case File introduces another mystery.
And every mystery asks the same question:
Would you survive?
